The 6th Annual Maryville Kiwanis Leadership Adventure Camp held at Camp Wesley Woods July 12-17, 2009 was again an unqualified success. Some 31 'rising' 8th graders from Eagleton Middle School, Heritage Middle School and Maryville Middle School had the experience of their young lives.
Not only did they participate in numerous 'camp' activities like hiking, canoeing, rock climbing and swimming but also they heard numerous leaders throughout the week on the subject of leadership. These volunteer speakers came from fields like education, politics, law enforcement and business.
Students focused especially on service-oriented leadership in their schools. Among their many other activities they outlined and planned a specific project for their respective schools and presented to the sponsoring Kiwanians and each other.
The students were accompanied at all times by six Wesley Woods counselors and two representatives of the Maryville Kiwanis club: Randy Allen as the camp director and Patsy Russell, a HMS teacher, assisting him. Many other Kiwanians joined them for a Sunday 'kickoff' cookout and the Thursday evening final dinner.
